Royal Caribbean’s Club Royale, Explained: How Casino Play Turns Into Free Cruises
If you’ve spent any time in a cruise ship casino, you’ve probably heard someone mention their “free cruise” and wondered how that actually works. On Royal Caribbean, the answer is a program called Club Royale, the casino’s loyalty club. Understanding it is the single biggest thing that’s let our family turn casino play into real travel. Here’s the plain-English version, updated for the 2026 rule changes most articles online haven’t caught up with.
What Club Royale actually is
Club Royale is Royal Caribbean’s casino rewards program. Every time you play with your SeaPass card in the machine, the casino tracks your play and gives you points and personalized offers in return. Enrollment is free. If you’re already a Crown & Anchor Society member, you’re signed up automatically the first time you play with your card in. You need to be 18 to play (21 on Alaska sailings).
It’s completely separate from Royal Caribbean’s cruise-loyalty program. That one is Crown & Anchor Society, which we cover in its own post. Club Royale rewards how you play. Crown & Anchor rewards how much you sail. They use the same member number, but the points never cross over. Casino play earns no Crown & Anchor points, and cruise nights earn no casino status.
How you earn
You earn by playing with your card inserted:
- Reel slots: 1 point for every $5 you cycle through the machine.
- Video poker and keno: 1 point per $15. This changed from $10 to $15 on April 1, 2026, so video poker now earns about a third as fast as slots.
- Table games: rated by the pit on your game, average bet and time played. Royal doesn’t publish a formula.
- Earns nothing: Texas Hold’em, Keymaster, Cash Crane and coin pushers.
One important catch: you don’t earn anything on FreePlay or promotional credits. Only your own money cycling through the machine counts.
Notice what “cycled” means. Points are about how much you play, not whether you win. Put $100 in a slot and play it through a few times, and you may have cycled $400 or $500 even if you walk away with less than you started. That’s the whole reason a perks-first approach works. You earn status and offers however the night goes.
Two currencies, not one
This is the most confusing part of the program, so it’s worth slowing down. The same play earns you two different things:
- Tier Credits set your status (Choice, Prime, Signature or Masters). They reset every year on April 1.
- Reward Points are spendable. Once you’ve banked the minimum, you can turn them into casino FreePlay or onboard credit.
Spending Reward Points does not lower your tier. If someone tells you they “cashed out their points and lost Prime,” that’s not how it works.
Where the “free cruise” comes from
People talk about “the free cruise” as if it’s one thing. It’s actually three different things, and knowing which one you’re looking at saves a lot of confusion.
1. The annual tier cruise
Reach Prime or higher and you get one free cruise a year. The cabin gets nicer as you climb: an interior stateroom at Prime, a balcony at Signature and a Grand Suite at Masters. The tiers and everything else each one unlocks are in The Club Royale Tiers, Broken Down.
The big 2026 change: for certificates issued from April 21, 2026, the annual cruise changed from a near-open list to a curated one. You used to be able to book almost any qualifying sailing except a handful of blacked-out dates. Now Royal hands you a set roster to choose from. It’s reportedly a few hundred sailings, weighted toward older ships and quieter dates, with the newest ships largely left off. Royal’s own rewards page describes it as select sailings up to 7 nights, and this year’s certificate has to be booked and sailed by March 31, 2027. It’s still a free cabin. It’s just a much narrower menu than most of what’s written online will tell you.
2. Instant Cruise Reward certificates
These are the ones most people don’t know about. As your points climb during a single sailing, you can unlock a certificate toward a future cruise, and the casino typically hands them out near the end of the trip. They’re based on what you played on that cruise, not your lifetime status. Players report the qualifying levels change monthly, so don’t trust anyone’s “chart.” They’re also moving from paper to digital. 3. Personalized offers
Between cruises, Royal Caribbean sends offers sized to your play history: discounted or comped fares, FreePlay and onboard credit. You’ll find them at clubroyaleoffers.com (sign in with your Crown & Anchor number) and, more and more, in the Royal Caribbean app. For a lot of regular players, these offers end up worth more than the annual cruise.
What “free” actually covers
This is where people get surprised at checkout. A comped Club Royale stateroom covers the cruise fare for you and one guest at double occupancy. You still pay:
- Taxes, fees and port expenses
- Gratuities
- Anything onboard: drinks outside the casino, specialty dining, excursions, Wi-Fi
- Upgrades, and any extra guests or cabins
A few rules worth knowing before you book:
- Families of four need a second cabin. The comp covers two people in one room. For us, that means a second cabin at a discounted rate, not a free one.
- Solo travelers in a double-occupancy cabin still owe the second guest’s fare.
- Offers can’t be transferred or sold, and they have no cash value.
- No-shows are penalized. Skip a comped sailing and future offers can require a $200 deposit per stateroom for the next 12 months.
- FreePlay isn’t cash. It usually has to be played through, it earns no points and it expires on the last night.
Royal has also started adding a small non-refundable booking fee to some comp offers, so read the terms on every offer before you accept it.
What it looked like for us
On our Star of the Seas sailing in August 2026, we tracked every dollar. We were down $6,994 in the casino over the trip. The cruise fare value we got back from the casino was $8,573 at the prices anyone else would have paid. That’s +$1,579 on the math that matters, before counting the drinks, the FreePlay and the tier credits we carried into next year.
That’s a good trip, not a guarantee. Plenty of sailings go the other way. That’s why we run the numbers after every one. The worksheet we use is free below.
The honest part
We say this in every one of these posts because we mean it: the casino has a mathematical edge, and gambling is never a reliable way to make money. Club Royale is a loyalty program, not an income strategy. We treat our play as a fixed entertainment budget, an amount we’ve already decided we’re comfortable spending, and the perks are what make that budget stretch into travel.
