Royal Caribbean’s Club Royale, Explained: How Casino Play Turns Into Free Cruises
If you’ve spent any time in a cruise ship casino, you’ve probably heard someone mention their “free cruise” and wondered how that actually works. On Royal Caribbean, the answer is a program called Club Royale — the casino’s loyalty club — and understanding it is the single biggest thing that’s let our family turn casino play into real travel. Here’s the plain-English version of how it works.
What Club Royale actually is
Club Royale is Royal Caribbean’s casino rewards program. Every time you play with your SeaPass card in the machine, the casino tracks your play and gives you points and personalized offers in return. It’s completely separate from the regular cruise-loyalty program (that’s Crown & Anchor Society, which we cover in its own post) — Club Royale rewards how you play, not how much you sail.
How you earn
You earn points by playing with your card inserted: roughly 1 point for every $5 you cycle through a slot machine, and about 1 point per $15 on video poker. Table games earn based on your average bet and time at the table. One important catch: you don’t earn points on free play or promotional credits — only your own money in the machine counts toward status.
Notice what that means: points are about how much you play, not whether you win. That’s the whole reason a perks-first approach works — you’re earning status and offers regardless of how the night goes.
Where the “free cruise” comes from
Two ways, really. First, once you reach a status tier (we break those down in The Club Royale Tiers, Broken Down), you unlock a free annual cruise — the cabin gets nicer as you climb, from an interior room up to a full suite. Second, and this is the part most people don’t realize, Royal Caribbean sends you personalized offers in your Club Royale account based on how you’ve played: discounted or comped fares, free play, and onboard credit. There are even NextCruise Instant Reward Certificates that unlock while you’re still onboard as your points climb during a sailing — book your next cruise at the shipboard desk to cash them in.
One important update, and it’s a big one: as of April 2026 that annual cruise became a curated list rather than a near-open one. It used to be you could book almost any qualifying sailing except a handful of blacked-out dates. Now Royal Caribbean hands you a set roster to choose from — a few hundred sailings, weighted toward older ships and quieter dates, with the newest ships largely off it. It’s still a free cabin. It’s just a much narrower menu than most articles online will tell you, and the current certificate has to be both booked and sailed by March 31, 2027.
And “free” means the fare. You still owe taxes, fees and port expenses, plus gratuities and whatever you spend onboard. One more thing worth knowing before you start planning around it: a comped stateroom covers you and one guest at double occupancy. For a family of four like ours, that means a second cabin at a discounted rate, not a free one.
The honest part
We say this in every one of these posts because we mean it: the casino has a mathematical edge, and gambling is never a reliable way to make money. Club Royale is a loyalty program, not an income strategy. We treat our play as a fixed entertainment budget — an amount we’ve already decided we’re comfortable spending — and the perks are what make that budget stretch into travel.
